Friedrich August von Kaulbach, Germania, 1914. Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin. In the museum, Germania is a commanding force that cannot be overlooked. Standing larger than life (over 14 feet in height), the actual tones of the painting are opulent, abundantly applied in some parts, accentuating a sense of wherewithal to survive, an ominous presence looming on the horizon. Germania encapsulates hope and resistance in the midst of adversity, at the start of WWI. She is the warrior goddess that emboldens the spirit to fight on.
