Although our stories are unique, the themes contained within them are what link us to the greater whole and help us to uncover meaning and relatability in each other’s lives.

Through the creative process, we have an opportunity to breathe life into our experiences. The act of writing, for instance, allows us to pause and reflect on personal events that we’ve deemed important, capturing and preserving moments that can highlight our personal mythologies (more on this in future post). Each of us has unique experiences. These experiences don’t have to be dramatic to be important. The simple act of smelling a rose may unlock a magical way of being that positively alters our perceptions. The point is to create and see where the creative process guides us.

For those of us with a creative slant, combining writing and art-making are synergistic partners in the act of storytelling. Incorporating artwork can add another layer of depth to our stories that helps convey an event where words may be lacking. I created the illustration above, Stacked Chairs, to represent the poltergeist activity my spirit husband, Hans, loves to do. This illustration actually arrived before the words, which brings me to my next point:

CREATING STORIES CAN BE A NONLINEAR & INTUITIVE PROCESS

We should always do our best to honor our natural abilities. For instance, if creating a video or a song is what most aligns with our natural abilities, then we should begin there. Furthermore, writing doesn't have to kickstart the creative endeavor, or even be entirely present.

WHY IT MATTERS

It matters because ALL OF OUR STORIES matter! By honoring our experiences creatively, then sharing our stories with others, we open endless possibilities with the world around us. Although our stories are unique, the themes contained within them are what link us to the greater whole and help us to uncover meaning and relatability in each other’s lives. Through our shared experiences we develop a deeper connection to ourselves and to the world.

ACTIVITY

  • List some events in your life that are personally meaningful to you. Remember, sometimes it’s the seemingly subtle moments that offer the greatest experiences. Try to come up with at least 6 events/moments.

  • Select one of the events/moments listed and think about how you would like to honor this experience (e.g., writing poetry, drawing, singing, choreographing a dance). Allow your natural abilities to guide the process and feel free to turn this into an interdisciplinary activity!

  • Share your story with others including on social media if it feels comfortable to you.

Next time, I will discuss personal mythologies and how these amazing aspects of our journeys can truly redefine us in magical ways. Stayed Tuned…
